Texas Prison Inmate Search

Do you need to find someone in Texas prison? If a family member or loved one has been sent to prison, you might be wondering how to find them. Probably you want to write to them and stay in touch while they do their time.

Texas Prison Inmate Search

I used to be able to display a form on this page that let folks search for inmates within TDC but the folks at TDCJ have changed the way things work and I cannot make it work now. I hope to have a solution soon. Meanwhile please continue to send your questions to me and I will keep trying to help y’all. Sorry for the hassle.

You can also check these other pages I have with information about Texas prison, Federal prison, and, soon to come, county jails in Texas.

    1. Im soo so happy for you rose im beginng on this road and its really hard but so happy for you cant wait till i can say the same as you
      god bless you

      1. Just hang in there. Keep your faith. It does pass. It’s heartbreaking and hard, but it will pass. Praying for you!!!

    2. We have a lot to be thankful for today, all of us. Rose, I know you and your son are thankful and I know me and my family are too. I’ve got a son who just turned two and a beautiful baby girl. I just recently dodged a bullet health-wise and I’m married to a beautiful woman and a great mother to my kids. Yeah life is good. To all of you dealing with having a loved one in TDC – keep the faith. Keep the faith. Things can get better if you let them. Peace out, y’all ~ Magnum

      1. Amen Magnum. We are blessed. My heart hurts for those still going thru. Keeping them in my prayers. Glad to hear about your babies and life!! Take care!!

  2. Does any one know why they change a person so many times my husband has been change 5 times and he only has 1 and a half months in jail first he was at tarrant county jail ,,greenbay facility then hutchins ,then gurney and now hes on goree also i want to know if he gets his mail i sent on jpay even if he is changed jail and what happenes with the lettter they get thou normal mail if they change them

    1. Gris, some folks just get moved around a lot. It can be so random like no reason or thought behind it. As far as getting mail – yes JPay will follow him anywhere. So will regular mail from the post office but it can be delayed more as they forward it along to him.

  3. My husband started in Middleton 1st of September then was transfered to the Byrd unit mid Oct and just recently got moved to Wynne. 1st parole review scheduled for January. Is it common to be moved this much? Is the mandatory minimum set off a year? Haven’t heard from him since Middleton so just trying to figure out how things worked. Thank you.

    1. Hi there…my son went from Middleton to Rudd and then didn’t move again, but I was told this is because he had a shorter sentence (2 years) and sometimes those with longer sentences can be moved more…I haven’t dealt with that so I don’t know. I am copying the timeline of events with tdcj and my son below and maybe it will give you some idea of how things work, although they can vary. It seems that all cases are different and treated/handled differently. The main thing is to keep the faith, head up, think positively. Prayers all goes well, inside for him and outside for you.

      11/18 Transferred back to Middleton
      11/19 transferred, not sure where
      11/25 is release date

      1. I just checked the site and he is at Goree now…in Huntsville. I know he is releasing from Huntsville at the Walls unit…so guess he is almost there…ahhhh. Praying for you and yours, I know this is hard, and very nerve wrecking. Hang in there.

        1. Thank you for the response Rose! So happy for you and your son. 🙂 I got a call from my husband so it looks like he’ll be far from home but he’s already seen parole for the 1st time and has over a year flat time in already even though he’s only been in a few months. We’ve been blessed in numerous ways and know that God is working all of this out. Thank you for the prayers as well.

        2. Hey Roae just a shout out to you and your son. I know you are probably pretty damn excited. You and your family enjoy your Thanksgiving, it’s going to be a special one for y’all. Peace ~ Magnum

  4. Hi my husband was just transfer 9 or 10 days ago i found him on the website but it says he is not eligible for visits does any one know way this may be hapening cause i called and they dont give me any reason or so

    1. Hey Gris, it usually takes a short while to get visitation. First you need to go through intake and get classified and all that. Just be patient and communicate with letters and pretty quickly he should get visitation.

      1. Thank you so much im new in this and its been so hard and your website makes it a little easier also do you know if theres a number of letters (mail) they can have or keep with them

        1. Hey Gris, you can send as many letters as you want. And getting mail is always the highlight of an inmate’s day. You can include photos (no nudity of any sort) and also things like copies of an article in a magazine. He can keep all your letters as long as they fit in his storage locker where he also needs to keep all his stuff like his food from commissary so there are some limitations. If he gets transferred at some point he will only be allowed to bring a certain amount of personal possessions but I wouldn’t worry about that right now. So, go ahead and start writing and don’t hold yourself back. (Just keep in mind that all letters incoming and outgoing are scanned by prison personnel so it’s not really private.) Good luck and keep in touch. Peace ~ Magnum

      SUerte.

  6. HEY I NEED HELP GUYS, SO MY HUSBAND COMPLETED THE LIFE CHANGING CLASSES THE FIRST WEEK OF NOVEMBER BUT HIS PRD IS IN JAN 2016 WILL THEY MAKE HIM WAIT TIL THEN TO RELEASE HIM OR IT WILL IT BE BEFORE????

    1. Has he been approved for parole?? If so then the PRD will be close to or exactly his release date. If no parole review yet then that still has to happen.

      1. YES HE WAS APPROVED IN JULY FOR PAROLE AND THIS IS WHAT IT STATES >> FI-3R (10/2015)- Transfer to a TDCJ rehabilitation program, such as Changes/Lifeskills, and release to parole on or after completion and not earlier than three months from the specified date of 10/2015. >> NOT QUITE SURE WHAT IT MEANS BUT HE COMPLETED THE CLASSES AND I HAD SOMEONE TO CALL ME LIKE A MONTH AGO OR SO TO VERIFY HIS ADDRESS

        1. Well to me it would seem like he would get out any time…if he could not be released no sooner than 10/15 and is to be released upon completion of the program. You could try calling your local parole office and see if they have anything on him yet…also, the release number in Austin 512-406-5202. They will just need his tdcj number and if they have a release date set will be able to tell you. Good luck! Really sounds like it should be soon!

          1. I just saw your other post where his PRD is January…I still say call and see if there is a release date, but there is a very real possibility that he will not get out until his PRD

          2. well I call someone this morning and they told me January but he completed his classes the first week of November but thanks for the info

          1. yes he was approved for parole in July already he completed the classes the first week of november

  7. My bf signed for 3 years tdc how do I set up the phone for him to call me when he gets down there , how long will it take for him to receive his money from Harris county to tdc ?? Will I be able to go to store for him online ???? Please help a lot people tell me one thing and another

    1. I don’t know how long it takes for money to transfer from county to tdcj. I know that once he shows up in the system you can instantly put money on his books and he will be able to go to store. I think if I remember right it took 30-45 days before I was able to purchase online for my son. Below are the steps for registering your phone for calls.
      Offender Telephone System

The Offender Telephone System (OTS) allows eligible offenders to make paid telephone calls to friends and family, in accordance with the TDCJ Disciplinary Rules and Procedures for Offenders.

      Information or registration:

Before you can receive calls from a TDCJ offender, you must first register your telephone number:
      •Internet: texasprisonphone.com
Note: You will need the offender’s TDCJ ID Number to register to receive phone calls from him or her. If you do not know their number you can find it through the online offender search at http://www.tdcj.state.tx.us/offender_information/index.html or by phone at (936) 295-6371 or (800) 535-0283. The phones are answered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday.
      •Telephone: (866) 806-7804

Telephone calls can be placed in the following manner:
•Collect calls – charges are accepted when the offender calls.
•Friends and Family Prepaid – the telephone number owner establishes an account in which to deposit money to pay for the offender’s calls.
•Offender Telephone Prepaid Debit Account – the offender or family can deposit money into the offender’s account.

The following rules apply to the system:
      •Phones are available from 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m., unless conditions dictate a change.
•Calls are limited to 20 minutes.
•You will hear a warning message one minute before being disconnected.
•Offenders have unlimited minutes per month.
•All calls, except to the Attorney of Record, are subject to monitoring and recording.
•Calls may only be made to home land line telephone numbers and post-paid cell phones. No calls are allowed to internet services, 800 numbers, businesses, pay phones, or international numbers.
•To receive calls, the name on the registrant’s driver’s license or state identification card must be reflected on their telephone listing or bill.
•To register you will be required to confirm that you: ◦Are the registered owner of the telephone number.
â—¦Agree to allow the offender to call the phone number.
â—¦Are at least 18 years old.
â—¦Will not forward calls or make 3-way calls received from the offender.

  8. Hey Magnum….Guess whos son is walking out them doors of Huntsville on 11/25….take a wild guess lol. Just fair warning if youre ever cruising youtube and theres any videos of any wild, crazy, old woman jumping and crying and running its not me lol. Im so freakin excited!!! Happy Happy Holidays this year for sure! Praying other loved ones are home soon!!!

    1. Congrats Rose!! I have been wondering about your son, the JPay forum is down, and I’m so happy to find this great news! He will be home for Thanksgiving!! God bless!

        1. Hi I was just wondering anyone could help me I can’t find my friends Id # so I can send him a letter through jpay. He’s in johnson county jail in cleburne tx I know they use jpay I just can’t find his id number. I really need some help any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

        2. Hi! I know I keep checking JPay, but its still down!! We went to visit Saturday, is so great! He was so happy to see us it had been such a long time!!! I have trouble finding this site, makes it hard to keep up. I know you are on top of the world, waiting for next Wednesday! Hugs!! Thank you for the prayers!!

          1. I miss yall on jpay!!! I am very crazy right now…anxious and excited and teary eyed…6 more days! Im soooo glad you got to see your son!!! It makes so much difference being able to see them! Im praying yours is home soon…keep hanging in there!!! I did call and mine caught chain this morning to Middleton and they said he should leave tomorrow morning for Huntsville but to call back Friday and if he is still there I can see him Saturday. This week with no calls because of lockdown and transferring has been long and yucky and Im sure horribly long for him. Just oh so thankful its almost over! Oh and I just google each time Texas Magnum then click the link and then click home to get here lol

          2. Hey DTMom – thanks for your note on here. Glad Rose was able to help you figure things out. She told you to use “Texas Magnum” to find the site but here’s another real simple way – just type in “intexasprison.com” or search for “in Texas prison” and the site pops right up pretty easy. Peace ~ Magnum

    2. Hey Rose, I know you and your son are so excited. Man, that is great, great news. Hey I apologize I haven’t been around to share in this great news with you. I had some unexpected surgery and the recuperating took a little more than I expected. But, I am back now, and everything came out OK so it’s back to normal.

So your son is already transferring and on his way, that is fantastic to hear. I guess you are already getting ready for the best Thanksgiving ever. I bet you are already cooking and planning. If he i like most of us, he is going to be on emotions overload when he gets home. It’s almost like so good feeling you can’t handle it – it’s awesome but at the same time almost too much because you have been waiting for it and imagining it so much for so long. I can’t even explain it, but he will know for himself in a few days. Then in a couple more days he will come back to earth and maybe even run into a few frustrations and challenges while he works it all out. Just be there and be patient with him.

I know you are real happy Rose, and I know he is about ready to bust. Congratulations to you on this very good news. Let us know all about his homecoming and hope you still find time to pop on here and visit. I got to get writing some new posts myself. Peaceful ~ Magnum

      1. ahhh so glad to hear from you!! Ive been worried about you! Sorry recoop time took longer, but glad you are okay!! I was just fixing to try to email you if I didn’t hear from you soon lol. Im a worrying mother you know? I can only imagine how he must feel because I know my emotions are NUTS! The anxiety/anticipation/excitement…dear me lol. This will def be the BEST Thanksgiving EVER!! You take care of yourself and I will def stay in touch and want to keep hearing you are doing good!!!

        1. Thanks Rose, I appreciate your concern and also thanks for helping folks out on here while I was out of action. I know you are just counting the days – it’s amazing TDC got it right and are giving your son back in time for Thanksgiving. Your son is one lucky dude. Peace to y’all ~ Magnum

  9. So my boyfriend has been transferred to a safp about an hour and a half away from our home town yesterday. It was early in the morning when he left but I can’t seem to find him on the tdc offender search, how long will it take for him to be in the system?

    1. I don’t know about safp but it seems logical to say with tdcj it may take 24-48 hours for it show up changed in the system.

    2. Hi, so I’m new to this and was hoping someone could answer if inmates are all mixed up or are they separated by crime in tdc? Pretty sure my dad is getting transferred here…separated by crime*

      1. From what I understand when they are first at Middleton for classification they are all kinda together…then once thru there and set where to go their unit is based on length of sentence and type of crime…Magnum, is this right??

      1. Lina that is great – glad he showed up so quick. He’s lucky to get safp – he’ll be home in no time. Peace ~ Magnum
