Texas Prison Inmate Search

Do you need to find someone in Texas prison? If a family member or loved one has been sent to prison, you might be wondering how to find them. Probably you want to write to them and stay in touch while they do their time.

Texas Prison Inmate Search

I used to be able to display a form on this page that let folks search for inmates within TDC but the folks at TDCJ have changed the way things work and I cannot make it work now. I hope to have a solution soon. Meanwhile please continue to send your questions to me and I will keep trying to help y’all. Sorry for the hassle.

You can also check these other pages I have with information about Texas prison, Federal prison, and, soon to come, county jails in Texas.

  1. i can’t find a friend of mine Douglas dean gatlin n i really need to find out where he I’d I’m very worried please help me locate him.

    1. Hello, the TDC database does not show Douglas Gatlin as in their system. Could he be a Federal inmate rather than State of Texas?

  2. Help find out where he is at!!!!!!!
    Inmate’s Name… KRAMER, GREG ALLEN
    SO………….. 107757
    Address……… 133 DETROIT
    CSZ…………. NEDERLAND,TX
    Arrest Date….. 10/14/13
    ARREST.TIME….. 06:05:00am
    Charges……… MTAG(POSS PROH WEAPON)(F)
    Bond Amt…….. NOBOND
    Authority……. 161ST DISTRICT COURT

    1. This person does not appear in the TDC database. I am not surprised, based on his arrest date, he is probably still in county awaiting trial. You can check in the county jail that corresponds to the town he was arrested in. Good luck.

  3. My fiance has been in custody since May. He had his parole hearing in October, but we still have not heard anything back from the parole board. How do I find out if he made parole?

    1. It can take a while, but, I would think you would be hearing pretty quick now. If his hearing was mid-October you are at about 2 months out. Here is a link to some phone numbers you can call to get the status. You will need his TDC number for this. Also, be prepared for a wait on the phone, but they will tell you what the status is. They don’t know any details though. Good luck, I hope you get good news soon!

  4. hello, I was wondering about my mother she is in plane state jail and she has served 80% of her time on Friday December 5th. do u know if she will even get her 20 % her out date is Feb 5th,2013 her sentence date was May 31st, 2013. today is Dec 17 2013…. we really miss here especially my 7yr old sister.. if u can help me with any info id appreciate it. also how do they send those offenders home by bus or do they go back to county?? thanks for ur time.

    1. Hi Stephanie. The thing about State Jail sentences is that they are day-for-day, meaning she must serve the entire sentence. Now, there are some TDC inmates being HOUSED in certain State Jails, due to overcrowding in TDC units. And those folks fall under TDC sentencing. So, the question is, was your mother’s case a State Jail felony or a TDC felony? I could try to help you figure that out, if you don’t happen to know, if you told me what the charges were. Regarding how the inmate gets home when they are released, they will get sent to a completely different unit that is considered a release unit. For example, Huntsville. From there, if they do not have someone coming to pick them up, the State of Texas will give them bus fare. I hope this info helps and feel free to get back in touch if you want, about your mom’s charges and whether they are State Jail charges or regular TDC charges. Peace.

  5. my moms out date is for February she has done 80percent of her time dec 2. 2013 who should I contact about good behavior and 20 percent? if it still counts.

  6. We usually talk every day Thursday was the last day I spoke to him I had low balance on my phone account and what he told me was he had ask one of the guards if the we’re going to transfer any inmates to the state jail that day the guard told him yes did not tell him if he was on the list but he told me to check on line if he did not appear for me not to put money on my phone anymore but when I call over the phone they say his still bring held at the county but if I don’t have balance the call will no come tru I just don’t want to add money if his not there I just call not today and they tell the same thing his held at the county but doesn’t say the same thing on line I’m kind of confuse here??

  7. Ones again thanks for your advised there’s also another weir thing when I go to the jail lookups for the county it doesn’t show anything when I enter his information but when I call the county over the phone it tells me that the book in# of the person I enter is being held at the dallas county jail but online it says no criteria was found that’s the reason I think his already transfer I’m not also how long does it take after there transfer for them to be able to make a phone call and how can I create an account to receive collect calls from the state I don’t think is the same system i was using for the county?????

    1. I agree with you, he is probably transferred and just not up to date in the system yet. Within the next day or two I think you will see him pop up. And, you are right, you will usually have to use a new phone calling system that is authorized for TDC. Honestly with the short amount of time you are looking at, I would be inclined to use JPay to send email correspondence and forget about setting up phone account because TDC and State Jail are a lot different than County and your inmate will not have access to a phone daily or even regularly like they do in County, especially at first. The way JPay email letters works is you write the letter via your JPay account like you are sending an email, and the prison prints it out and delivers it to your inmate like regular mail. Your inmate cannot reply electronically, he must hand write a letter and mail it to you. One thing all inmates enjoy is money for stamps and envelopes. In JPay you can also put money on his commissary account which is one thing you can do for him that will be very appreciated. Good luck. Don’t worry, time’s going to go by fast for y’all.

  8. Thank you the reason I was asking is because according to him he’s was sentence to 6 moth but he was already in the county for like 4 moths according to the lawyer he had like 45 day to be release he was transfer after 30 days from his sentence is it possible that the get transfer if they only have a couple of day to go..

    1. Hi Nikki, yes, as strange as it sounds, this is the case. It sounds like your guy might have what is called a “state jail” sentence. This is usually for sentences of two years or less, and they are “day for day” which means if the sentence is for 6 months every day of that 6 months needs to be served. If his time to transfer comes up while in county, it won’t matter if he has only a short while left on his total sentence, they will ship him out and put him through the process of intake. It’s stupid because they spend money on transferring him and paperwork than makes any sense for just a week or two there. Oh well… sounds like he will be home soon anyway. Hang in there and tell him to stay out of trouble and away from the law once he’s home!

  9. T-Mag, I thank you so very much for your kind words and your time in collecting that information for me. I tried and tried but couldn’t get anywhere. 94 years sounds good to me. Thanks again, my friend. RIP Auntie Flora, we all love you!

    1. You’re sure welcome. The TDC system can be pretty hard to navigate if you’re not used to it. And I don’t suggest anyone choose to be “used” to the Texas Dept of Corrections! RIP to your Auntie indeed.

  10. I am trying to find out information on John Charles Zimmerman: first conviction 1977, overturned, second conviction 1979 also overturned. I have found information from 1988 about the second conviction being overturned but have not been able to locate anything from that point on.
Victim: Ramona Ann Abner murdered 1977, she and I were childhood friends.
Any information about the 1988 ruling and retrial would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Hi Elizabeth. I do not find John C. Zimmerman in the TDC database at this time, he is not currently an inmate at Texas Department of Corrections. I did a little searching and it appears to me that the conviction for murder held, what was not upheld was the death penalty. Based on this I would bet he stayed incarcerated, only did not face the death penalty. It’s hard to say if he was ever released or if he actually passed away while in custody, which does happen. I wish I could give you more information, sorry. Hope you find some answers, can you contact her family members?
