Texas Prison Inmate Search

Do you need to find someone in Texas prison? If a family member or loved one has been sent to prison, you might be wondering how to find them. Probably you want to write to them and stay in touch while they do their time.

Texas Prison Inmate Search

I used to be able to display a form on this page that let folks search for inmates within TDC but the folks at TDCJ have changed the way things work and I cannot make it work now. I hope to have a solution soon. Meanwhile please continue to send your questions to me and I will keep trying to help y’all. Sorry for the hassle.

You can also check these other pages I have with information about Texas prison, Federal prison, and, soon to come, county jails in Texas.

  1. My husband caught chain this morning from LewLew in Dallas,Tx how long will it be before I can find out where he has been placed.

    1. NayNay, it usually takes just a couple days before a person shows up in the TDC system. Just keep checking every day and he will show up. When he does, it will show his TDC number, which you have to put on your letters to him, and it will show the Unit he is at. To get the address, click on the Unit name and a list with all the addresses will pop up. Peace ~ Magnum

  2. What would make someone not eligible for visits…. and when it says projected release date is that date a guarantee that he would be out on that day

    1. My sons visit status changes from yes to no every weekend when he gets his visit, then on Monday changes back. If they got in trouble their visits could be restricted and I believe if the unit is locked down there arent visits. The projected release date is not a promise…thats just when they CAN let them out if they want to and if they have done their time/classes well with no problems or cases.

    2. As Rose said, there are a lot of reasons for not being eligible for visits. Everything from a discipline issue he had to the entire unit or just his pod being on lockdown. And, a projected release day is not a guarantee at all. It is just when the system figures is around when they will get out. Then, in actuality, it has to do with many factors, if he has kept out of trouble, completed certain classes, and things like that.

  3. My boyfriend was in Ector county Odessa, then been moved to hudspeth county in Sierra Blanca, his release date should be August 10th, but today he still there, not moved back to Odessa yet. I so worry, don’t know what happened. Is that possible they keep him longer in jail?

    1. Hey Margarita, when it comes to County jail I am not sure what might be going on. Sometimes a person is in one county jail and then gets sent to another to face some charges they had pending in that other county. That might be the case with your boyfriend. Have you called the jail he is at for information? At a county jail it is usually a lot easier to actually get someone on the phone who will tell you some information. That would be what I would ry if I was you. But, it’s been awhile since you wrote this so maybe he is home by now, I hope so.

  4. I tried prisontalk again, thru Mozilla and IE. I log in and get a thank you for logging in then a box pops up that I cant access the site either I am not approved/activated or have been deactivated, same thing that has happened since first creating a log in there.

    1. Rose, first off thank you for being here on the blog and helping out with people’s questions. I have been real busy and not able to be on here much at all. I notice you are really helpful though and I appreciate you helping folks getting some answers. As you know it’s a confusing time for people when their loved ones and family members are sent to prison. Now for prisontalk.com, I just don’t know what could be happening. Can you click on FORUM and at least read the threads or you can’t access the forum at all? I wonder if you just made yourself a new email address, like a gmail account or yahoo account, and try again starting fresh. I know, from how much you have participated on this blog, that the forum would be good for you, it’s very active all the time and there is lots of folks who really know all the ins and outs of getting through this. I guess there is only so much hassle a person wants to go through to get on a forum. Wish you weren’t having those problems. Hang in there Rose and peace to you and your son ~ Magnum

  5. Here I am again. Is there ANYthing you can do about a co lying and writing a minor case (with major consequences)? I called to speak with the Warden, instead got the Liaison…We are very upset about the unfairness of the situation and how my son is being treated…all he has done is just try to do is time and get home. It almost feels like its all a mind game and they WANT to tear you down and cause you to act like an idiot and be all the things they think you are. Its very hard to maintain a good attitude and mood when you see the bs and now are subject to the bs unfairly. Should I continue to call the Wardens office and try to speak to him? Should I go the ombudsman route? I really need some direction here. My son has already filed his grievance/appeal…other COs even told him to do this that they have never seen him or his wife be inappropriate as accused…the CO that wrote him up did not see anything, and during the discussion after visitation stated that he did not see anything and my son should be glad or he would write him up, but then turned around and wrote it up as if he had witnessed it and terminated the visit ten minutes early. The terminated visit is bs and the Liaison even said that was bs they do not have the authority to do that and cant do that so he dont know why the CO said that. I said well if he said that and its not true then how do you know the other part is true? No answers, just oh well its just 60 days no contact visits, 30 days no rec or commissary…oh thats easy for them, it dont effect them. Im sooooo aggravated with this mess. Can you call someone, Huntsville, someone and request a transfer to a new unit due to singled out by a co and treated unfairly?

    1. Never mind…God is good and things are okay…nothing needed more than prayer and believe me prayer works!

    2. I have been in situations in prison before. And the truth of the matter is, they are not going to do anything. It’s his word against the co. And like one co told me. One co lying, will carry more weight than twenty prisoners telling the truth. No one will ever know, cause those walls hide everything from the outside world. Sorry. Sad but true. And the warden will only pass it down to rank. Which is friends with the co. So you are in a no win situation..

      1. yea…some how tho this last weekend he still got a contact visit…hoping maybe its all resolved, hoping, guess we shall see when I go this weekend. Just be glad when this crap is over

    3. Best advice is tell your son to read his inmate handbook. My experience is that inmates who cannot or will not follow the rules such as shaving, keeping shirts tucked in and pants up, engage in disobedience to orders, late for work or classes, cursing at staff are the ones that wind up calling mommy for help to call the warden.
These are supposed to be grown up men. The vast majority of inmates do thier time after adjusting to the rules of prison life without getting cases.
They know the rules better than the gaurds. It they that control how hard thier time is. This is the first time for many that they have been told that NO means NO.
You were not there when they did thier crime and you can’t be there to do thier time. All he is doing is stressing you out and using you.
Yeah there are some officers that are more strict and c/s than others, but basics of following the rules, the yessir and no sir, yes mam and no mam.
      Go along ways.

      1. Thanks for the advice. My son has read the handbook and has had no cases and been in no trouble…this situation was a stupid one that wasnt even true and has been fixed. I have yet to have him call crying to me about anything, he may call pissed off and vent, because he holds his tongue in there and minds his own business and is just trying to get this behind him. He had his on straight before choosing this sentence and has only gotten stronger in his determination for a new life since. And yes he chose this, against my better judgment and input…but its okay because its almost over, finally.

    4. Hey Rose I have to say, even though its really shitty that your son is getting the run around, there probably isn’t much you can do about it. My best advise on this is that he is going to have to tough it out. I don’t think you contacting anyone there at the prison will help much. What Tdcco and Been There replied to you was maybe worded a little harsh but basically that is the way it is. The guards have the power in there. Some of them are ok guys just doing a job and others are on ego trips or just jerks. It’s like you said, sometimes they are trying hard to push you into getting angry and screwing up. Hopefully your son just lays low for a bit and things settle down for him. I tried not to tell my mother about stuff going on because I knew she would just spend all her time dwelling on it and worrying about it and I also knew there wasn’t much to do except just get through it. I hope that is what your son chooses to do. Just remember, each day passing is one more day closer to the end of this. Keep the faith.

    2. How long does it take to get my husband in the system once he’s been moved to Lindsey STATE jail from county?

        1. Hi, I belive you’ve been helping everyone here. So I ask you My babies father got caught with a cellphone about 1year ago they moved him to high security and just recently heard from court , they are trying to give him 9yrs is that right? Or should I just get a lawyer for him??! Thank you

          1. Hey Marlenen, I answered your other question already, but yes I think you should get a lawyer if it’s possible. Having a cellphone inside is a serious offense. Good luck ~ Magnum

      1. Hey Christy, I was away from here for awhile. I am pretty sure by now you’ve found him but yeah, it takes a couple days for a person to show in the system. Hope you have been able to hear from him by now and that things are going OK. Peace ~ Magnum

    3. Hey Dulce, sorry for the delay. I am sure by now you have found out Jonathan is at Garza West. That is a transfer unit so you can expect him to move again at some point but if you write to him with his TDC number and he is transferred they will send his letter to where he is. Same with money on his books. Good luck to you and him. Peace ~ Magnum

  7. My sons sentence to state jail after probation revokation was for 180 days but his release date shows only 90 days(which ends today). Since state jail doesnt have “good time” or early release how can that be and will he likely be relased on that day? The site still says not sheduled for release, same as it always has so we’re kind of confused.
Also he is at the Hutchins Tx. unit, when he does get released, where will they do that? Just send him out the front gate or transfer him to someplace likea jail beforehand?
    Thanks

    1. Well got my answer,,he was released after only 90 days of a 180 day state jail sentence. Didnt think that was possible.

  8. Hello I’m in need of help or advise on what to do . My dad is in prison is being released 8/7/2015 , he is a resident here in the US but the problem he got into could cause him to lose he’s green card an get deported , anyways ive called ICE an I CAN’T seem to get a hold of anyone , what should I do ????

    1. Hello Daniella, ICE is real hard to get a hold of. I think if ICE wants to deport him right away, he would already have an ICE hold on him. If he is being released and you don’t know of any ICE hold on him, then he is probably OK for the moment and can get out and then deal with this himself. If anything try to find out if he currently has an ICE hold. He ought to know if he does. Good luck to you and your dad. ~ Magnum

    1. Hey Chris, a temp release can be for a couple of things. Sometimes it is to be transferred to a county jail to face other pending charges. Sometimes it can be for medical attention that is above what can be provided at the prison infirmary. Very rarely an inmate is released for a funeral of a close family member, but this isn’t too common. Hope you get word soon as to where they are. Peace ~ Magnum

  9. I am looking at my boyfriends record and it says hes not eligible for visits… does that also include letters… can i write him and how?

    1. Hey LaRica, You should be able to write to your boyfriend even if he cannot have visits at this time. Peace ~ Magnum
