Texas Prison Inmate Search

Do you need to find someone in Texas prison? If a family member or loved one has been sent to prison, you might be wondering how to find them. Probably you want to write to them and stay in touch while they do their time.

Texas Prison Inmate Search

I used to be able to display a form on this page that let folks search for inmates within TDC but the folks at TDCJ have changed the way things work and I cannot make it work now. I hope to have a solution soon. Meanwhile please continue to send your questions to me and I will keep trying to help y’all. Sorry for the hassle.

You can also check these other pages I have with information about Texas prison, Federal prison, and, soon to come, county jails in Texas.

  1. Hello my niece will be going in front of the parole board on Monday 9/21/2015. I just sent my support letter today 9/14 will the parole members still accept it even though her parole hearing is just right around the corner? Thanks in advance!

  2. My Daughter has been trying for days to get information on her Mother in Carol Young Facility. Her TDCj number is 00607836 Lori Beth Adams. It is our understanding she may have had some seizures or strokes and is not expected to make it much longer. The tough part is nobody id cooperating in giving us information on her condition. How can we get a status on her condition? For all we know she could have passed and it has been swept under the rug.
    Thanks!

    1. It is very hard to get the folks at a unit to tell you anything. If you have good reason to believe she is seriously ill, your daughter might try to contact the prison chaplain. They can be a little better about talking to a family member. Lori Beth Adams still shows as at the unit, so she has not been transferred to a hospital, if that was the case she would show as temporarily unavailable. So, hopefully she is not as bad off as you are thinking. I hope your daughter hears something soon, she must be very worried. Keep us posted when you get some word, and peace to y’all ~ Magnum

  3. my son is serving 180 days in state jail has been in county detention center waiting to be sent to state jail he has been in county detention center for 3 months wish is half his sentence already and barely got sent on tuesday 9/8 how long before i can find out what his release date will be shows nothing in the tdcj website yet.

    1. Hey Dolly, State Jail sentences are meant to be “serve all”, so he is looking at doing the remaining 90 days. You can look forward to him being home in time for Christmas. Good luck to both of you and peace ~ Magnum

  4. Is the Johnston Unit in Winnsboro TX on lockdown? Ive been trying to get with tdc#1998001 & cant contact him.

    1. Hey Bianca, as far as I can see Johnston Unit is not on lockdown. When you say “trying to get with”, what do you mean? Contact by letter or visit? He is eligible for visit, are you on his visitors list? Good luck ~ Magnum

  5. I have been looking for my brother-in-law for a couple of days and I can’t seem to find him his name is Jose Dario Ramos Mejia and his day of birth is 10/04/1991. I have been looking for him for a couple of days and I can’t find nothing on him. I for a fact know that he is in jail I just don’t know which one.

    1. Is he in jail or prison? I only know how to search the TDCJ site and he does not show up there. If its jail and you know what county you should be able to call them and find out if hes there.

    2. Vicky, if your brother in law was recently detained then the first step is to find out where. He will not be in prison yet, that takes time and may not even happen, depending on what he is detained for. He can be in a county jail or city jail. If you know what city or town he was at, that is your best bet. Find out the County for that city or town. Some Texas county jails do have inmate search tools, you can find their websites pretty easily searching Google. But, a lot of city and county jails are a LOT more helpful than they are at TDC, and you can just call and ask if he is detained there. Regarding his name, you need to make sure you ask for him the way his license reads or his official ID. Usually in the US the father’s last name is the name used and they drop the mother’s last name. So, I am guessing you would want to ask for Jose Ramos and his birth date. If you tell us what city or town he was in when this happened, I can try to help you find him. Meanwhile, he might contact your family soon. Hang in there and good luck. Peace ~ Magnum

  6. I wish to no above my son got parole he been for many years in prison’s he have pay half years of the time put I hope have give him his time to come home because I need he to help me I’m a sick ludy I need my son thanks you sir

      1. Hey Rose, thanks as always for keeping an eye on things here. I appreciate you. Any good word from your son lately? Peace ~ Magnum

        1. Hi there! Hope your life is going amazing! Ive become rather “OCD” about checking the sites Ive used thru this time period lol…several times a day. Nothing new yet, but Changes is finished this Friday and we will send in copies of his certificate to the parole board. I know they vote next month. Other than that we are just hanging and waiting and hoping. A guy in his dorm had a SA to PRD and when his Changes class was completed his SA changed to a release date about a month early, so not holding my breath but am hoping lol. Just hangin in there and holding on!

          1. Hey Rose, have you guys sent in a parole packet? TDC says they are not necessary but a lot of folks prepare them and send. Basically it is showing parole that your son has a good support system waiting on the outside, from family and friends, a place to live, possibilities of a job. Might be worth getting one together, can’t hurt, might help. Not sure if you can see this link but here is some info about it: http://prisontalk.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=594

        2. Yes sir…we have sent in a packet, numerous letters with several jobs available to him. Thank you for thinking of us tho. I did turn around and send in new letters with second review even tho they said he would have all files from first review. My son actually even wrote his own letter this time and didnt last time, so maybe it will help.

    1. Hello Cruz, there are so many factors that effect when someone gets parole. If you give us his name we can see what TDC has to say. It depends on his charges, if they are considered “aggravated” charges then it takes longer to get parole. Also, it depends on how things have gone for your son during his incarceration. If he has done half his time that is great, he is getting much closer to his release. I am sorry to hear you are not well, and hopefully we can find out he will be home soon to help you out. Take care and peace to you ~ Magnum

  7. My brother was transported to the Middleton Transfer Unit 08/31/2015. I have been trying to get an ID number for him using the TDC inmate search but have had no luck. How long does it usually take for them to show up in the system? Would it be best if I called Middleton?

    1. Hi Lucie…I would think he should show up on the tdcj website today or tomorrow…My son was transferred on a Friday morning and I believe it was Tuesday when he was on there and I could write him. Just keep checking the site. You can try calling, I did when my son didnt show up right away, but they couldnt tell me anything. Hang in there, right now all you have is patience.

        1. Youre welcome! As soon as you get his number write him and if possible put money on his books. My son said the first trip to store everyone was telling him he couldnt buy but he got there and had money! He said it was like Christmas. Letters and some money help them so much! Hang in there!

  8. Ok, so my boyfriend has been gone 9/25/2015 will make 3 yrs, he signed for 7 but for some reason he believes that he will be home a lot sooner than either of us expect. I wanted to ask is that really possible since this is not his first offense? Also he mentioned something about his custody level changing that will allow him to call me more often, not really sure what that means either. I am just lost and need clarification on what’s going on. He is 6 hours away from me and has been for 2yrs now, I am checking tdcj offender search to see if anything has changed and nothing…. Help me please….

    1. Hey…Im sorry there is no set answer. Parole depends on how they behave inside, the nature of their charge, the history…its hard to just guess. My son signed for two years and was told hed be eligible for parole after six months. In our naivety we took that to mean home in six months…rude awakening. He was denied his first parole and is being reviewed again now. The parole officer there at the unit told him that if he had a longer sentence, like five years, he would of done went home, but that short sentences normally stay until their PRD. I dont know your boyfriends situation, but its possible if all goes well he could make it home by his PRD…just depends on all sorts of things. Sorry

    2. Hi Jessica, what Rose told you is pretty much the case, there is just no way to know, as there are so many variables. I will say having his custody level change for the better IS good. That means he is behaving as they want him to, doing the classes they want him to, etc. and yes, it can result in more privileges. It sounds like your boyfriend is preferring to remain optimistic about his situation and that is a good thing. Write to him often and encourage him to keep on the right path – he will be home soon. Peace to y’all ~ Magnum

  9. Hey Texas Magnum…thanks!! I will try with an alternate email and see if I can get in. I honestly dont know if it were the phone calls made by me and my daughterinlaw, the fact that the co was caught in a lie, or just an answer to prayer but it all worked out and he was not cut off of contact visits and it all “went away” So Im thankful! Anddddd he saw IPO yesterday and as long as things stay as they are he will be out 11/29, which is a Sunday so they said it would probably be 11/27 and that is the friday after Thanksgiving so she said he could possibly be home before the holidays!! Im so thankful! Thankful for this site, for jpay forum and just in general! God is good and Im praying for yall…and I worried a bit I might be overstepping bounds by answering questions, I dont have a lot of experience, but do know how it feels out here with someone in there and just want to encourage and help others thru as much as possible. Take care!!!

    1. Right on, Rose. Sounds like things are looking up. Your son will soon be what’s called a short-timer – looking at light at the end of the tunnel. Glad to hear it, and any and all input and participation from any one who happens along here is good stuff as far as I am concerned.

  10. My fiancé was just transferred to Garza West. How long does it take for an inmate to receive a visit? Also will I be able to have a contact visit as a fiancé.

    1. Having a contact visit depends on if you are on his list that he filled out when he arrived at TDC. I would imagine, as his fiance, you were included. It usually takes several weeks to get cleared for visitation. Meanwhile, keep in touch with letters to him, they will help him keep his spirits up and feel in touch with the outside world. Peace ~ Magnum
