Do you need to find someone in Texas prison? If a family member or loved one has been sent to prison, you might be wondering how to find them. Probably you want to write to them and stay in touch while they do their time.
I used to be able to display a form on this page that let folks search for inmates within TDC but the folks at TDCJ have changed the way things work and I cannot make it work now. I hope to have a solution soon. Meanwhile please continue to send your questions to me and I will keep trying to help y’all. Sorry for the hassle.

Okay my turn again lol…I guess Im looking for assurance or reassurance. Im just so mistrustful and cynical. Where we stand right now is IPO says all is good and my son will be released on PRD. Parole votes after the 15th of this month…I do have a count down going on and we are at 49 days till PRD. Labs have been done, picture taken for id/dl…I still catch myself holding my breath and feeling as if I wont breathe easy until he walks out those doors. His prd is a Sunday, from his experience seeing people come and go, they don’t release on Sunday so the Friday before is the day after Thanksgiving…does TDCJ shut down on Black Friday lol? Could my hopes and prayers be legit that he will be home before the holidays? Its getting closer to that date and Im feeling anxious, hopeful and worried all at the same time…got some reassurance for this crazy mother? Hope all is awesome in your life Magnum!
Hey Rose, sorry I have been out of pocket for a while. I will tell you what I always said while I was inside – Hope for the best and expect the worst. I hope your son is released before Thanksgiving, that would be a fantastic gift for all of you. I would say that the timing seems really good that it COULD happen, but keep in mind that TDCJ is not going to take things like holidays or convenience into consideration. The fact that so much is happening for your son that indicates he is on the way out is very positive and I think very soon TDC will be behind him and you. Make sure you let us know how it goes on the 15th and any more news you receive, we will all be glad to her good news. I will be sure to let you know…Ive made some friends on these boards and my heart goes out to so many who have much longer sentences, adopted one of my sons friends at another unit lol…its just heartbreaking, yes I know you get yourselves in there, but whew its a hard lesson/punishment to have to learn. Hi my names Rebekah im new to this. My fiancé just got transferred today so i know it will take a lil while b4 i can get his tdc# but my question is he signed for 5 yrs and he has to do 1 yr state. He already has 11 months under his belt. How long do you think hell be home if he behaves.
My family member was recently “accepted” at Plane Unit for 180 days. I have deposited $ in the account and registered for phone callls. How long does it usually take before they can make a phone call?
Im not sure, Im thinking with the 180 days that it must be state jail…I know with Middleton they said it could take anywhere from two weeks to 45 days to get a phone call. My daughter had a friend who went to Sanchez, which is also a state jail, and I think he was able to make calls sooner than that. Im sorry Im not much help…the main thing is the money on their books so they can hit store and write you asap! Hang in there, 180 days seems long but it will go by fast!

My husband went before the parole board while in the transfer unit Middleton and he was just transferred to another unit but closer to Dallas does this mean he’s been approved by the parole board or what does this mean.

How long after an inmate leave the county jail does it take for them to get to there permanent unit.My husband made it to the Byrd unit on 9-23-15 but is going to safp how long does the transfer take. as I kno his time doesn’t start til the day he gets to the safp unit

Heather, I never had phone privileges in prison so I don’t know all that much about it to be honest. It is expensive compared to stamps and envelopes so I wrote letters. But, here is what TDC has to say about it. Hope this helps. http://www.tdcj.texas.gov/offender_telephone/index.html. I know as far as cell phones the phone has to be billed to your name as it is on your driver’s license and a few other rules. Good luck ~ Magnum
Hey magnum any idea how long it takes for someone to show up on the tdcj website after being transferred from county into the safp program
just a few business days and they should show up…the phone calls, you have to register your phone and I know with Securus when my son calls its like 5.20 for 20 minutes.
After they are processed they will get to call. The processing can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 45 days. They can begin getting mail and sending mail immediately, as long as they have money on their books to buy their stuff.

My husband was transferred this past Thursday night. When I research his name on the Harris County inmate search it says he is not in jail. When I search on this website he doesn’t come up either. My question is, how do I locate him and where he was sent to? Thanks!

Hey Gissel, it usually takes several days for s person to show up in the TDC inmate locator. Just keep checking and he will show up. As soon as he does you will see his TDC number on his record. You will need to include that on letters to him. You can click on the unit name that shows there as well and that will bring a new window to open that will show the address of that unit. If my loved one has a 35 year sentence non-aggravated. How much time do they need to serve in order for the parole board to consider the inmate for release?
Hey Yvette, sorry to hear your loved one is facing a long sentence. It’s good it’s non-aggravated. If you look him up in the locator tool, the projected release date is going to be a good indicator, but it’s hard to say with any certainty – it will depend on many factors. Can anyone please tell when when my sons father should be released his name is Rodrigo Montalvo date of birth 4/23/1990.I also have been getting calls from a church and different orginzations today asking for him so they can help him get on his feet but I tell them that he is still in prison. So with that being said it seems like he is getting out soon but I’m still not 100% sure November will make 1 yr he is in there.
The site says he has to complete a program first before being released and there is no release date set so there is no way to know as of yet. The good thing is that his parole is reviewed. Just keep checking the site.

Hey Angelica, when you search and find the inmate’s record, you can scroll down the page a bit to see more details. If you click the yellow button that says Parole Review Information you will see the details Rose told you about.

Hey Texas Magnum….trying to hold on to myself here, but I think we got some good signs. My son has to see medical today for labs…and he had put in for a different job and the Major told him last night that they weren’t approving it because he wasn’t gonna be there much longer and there was no reason to train in a new position…good signs right? Hello Magnum. My boyfriend is in Wallace Unit he saw parole like a week ago. I checked the website and it stated that he was not in parole review that he was approved on 9/15/2015. But below that it said FI-2 (7/2016). Can you tell what that means and about how long before he comes home?

Hey Anastasia, FI-2 means release on parole on a specified future date, so it would seem in his case that would be July of 2016. Sometimes part of this is they want the inmate to complete some courses like Changes before being released. TDC shows him at Wilderness 3 which I am not familiar with. Makes me think it might be some sort of rehab camp unit? Anyway, less than a year, and he ought to be home. Those dates they give are not guarantees but around that time.
