Texas Prison Inmate Search

Do you need to find someone in Texas prison? If a family member or loved one has been sent to prison, you might be wondering how to find them. Probably you want to write to them and stay in touch while they do their time.

Texas Prison Inmate Search

I used to be able to display a form on this page that let folks search for inmates within TDC but the folks at TDCJ have changed the way things work and I cannot make it work now. I hope to have a solution soon. Meanwhile please continue to send your questions to me and I will keep trying to help y’all. Sorry for the hassle.

You can also check these other pages I have with information about Texas prison, Federal prison, and, soon to come, county jails in Texas.

  1. I have a question my husband got picked up on Monday to get transferred to tdcj how long does it take for him to show up on the tdcj website

      1. I am trying to get as much information on SAFP. My girlfriend is supposed to pull chain there very soon or we think anyway. Do they typically pull chain on Tuesdays from Tarrant County and any idea which facility she will be at? I guess you can say that we are common law married but not typically. How can I ensure we can actually get to have a contact visit? Thank you and sorry for all of the questions!

        1. I think she just has to list you on visitor list as husband. Catching chain from there I know nothing about. First stop for processing is Middleton in Abilene.

          1. He was denied first parole?? Second parole review is in six months. The. If needed further reviews are yearly. I haven’t seen anyone yet with a PRD sooner than a review.

  2. Hi, my boyfriend was taken to tcd on 8/26/16, it’s now 8/29 and he still hasn’t been put on the tdcj offender website. Do you knw what might be going on? He left on a Friday, it’s now Monday and nothing. I check the website every few hours and still hasn’t showed up

  3. hello i have a quick question so my son as been in jail for 6 months thery are now talking 6 months in tdcj with back time counting how long would he have to stay?

    1. From what I’ve seen six month sentence would probably be done at. State jail which is pretty much day for day. The judge can order that back time is credited and he may not go anywhere. It can also be served in the county jail. Just depends on what is agreed on and what the judge says.

    1. You can call the unit/county he was in and see, or just keep watching the TDCJ site for him to show up or his unit to change.

    2. How long does it take after seeing parole to get an answer?? And has anyone been in there before or know about time calculations?? So my hubs been in there since 1-28-16 got to tdc 2-18-16 but he got his time sheet and it said as of last week he’s done 1yr & 5days total including his good time, work time and tdc time. My question is does anyone know what time parole takes in consideration when determining if he’s served 1/4 of his 4yr sentence ??

      1. In our situation the whole parole process, from starting to receiving an answer was about three months. After six months they do get their good time added and their line class change when there haven’t been any cases against them. I think Parole considers all things, good time, behavior inside, record outside…take everything into consideration before voting. Hang in there!

      2. Hey Rose sorry to bother u again but I had some questions about parole. I know you’ve been through this so I wanted to see what else to expect.. So my husband of course was denied his first parole 🙁 but they have him a year set off so I’m wondering why they didn’t give him a 6month review or do they say it’s a year set off and do it at six months?? Not too sure if I have hope to look forward to I’m too heartbroken right now..thx

        1. Awww I’m so sorry. I know how devestated you feel right now. When they first get in the system they are reviewed at six months, if denied second review after another six months. If denied the second time then reviews are yearly. I can’t remember if or what you said his PRD is. Is that in line with reviewing again in a year?? Charges, record and how they do inside all play a role in determining parole. I’m so sorry for this denial. Hang in there. This really will end and be bad dream.

          1. Thanks Rose, unfortunately parole states that there are no 6 month reviews unless a person’s sentence is 2years and under so everyone else gets yearly reviews and yes I’m devastated but I was expecting it. Yes his PRD was next November so it’s close to that hopefully they’ll move it up some. Until then I’ll stay busy. I was going to request a special review but I have to get a lawyer for it because I found that opposing letters is what played a major role in his parole decision. But for now I’m just taking it a day at a time.. Thank u so much

  4. My husband was arrested march 3 2016 for an animal cruelty charge from 2012 in hillsboro (hill county). He spent a month in lew sterret and then was transferred to hill county for a month when he was sentenced to 18 months.. Then he was transferred to Hutchins where he was for almost2 months.. They just transferred him to Gurney sometime this week.. So my questions are how long does it take for him to use the phone and get visits..? Also can I request a transfer back to Hutchins because i have 7 kids one which was hit by a car a week after my husband was arrested pretty bad.. And is there a way to request a sentence reduction? I believe he was on state jail side of tdcj.. And why would they transfer him to another tdcj facility

    1. First, I’m sorry youre here and going thru this, its not an easy or enjoyable ride during this thing called life. I know you can put in for a hardship transfer, not real sure how that works, but you could probably call the unit to get info on how to do that. Visits should just continue on as normal, no hold up, phone calls may take a few days to give them time to get him settled and the voice recognition done, but nothing ever takes as long as that initial processing. They transfer as they want, when they want, doesn’t seem to be much rhyme or reason to some of the things that TDCJ does. Its my understanding that state jail is day for day, whether they serve it at a state jail unit or a regular TDCJ unit. When you look him up online and see his PRD, projected release date, that is pretty accurate as to when he will be out. I’m so sorry about your kiddo, sounds like you’ve had a pretty rough year…hang in there!

  5. When will I get a release date he was approved for fi2 back in may and he’s set to be released on parole in August

    1. I would think you should know a date this month. Is his PRD in August? You can also call Release to see if they gave a date yet.

      1. If PRD means project release date then that’s his max sentence date which is in 2021.
(FI-2 (08/2016)- Release on parole on a specified future date (08/2016). ) shown online

        1. Yes that’s what PRD means…I called the Release number daily until they could give me a release date. (512) 406‑5202. I know people that get release dates early on and some that get them the day before, sucks when you have to make plans to be off work or whatever to be there. I would just be calling that number until they gave me a date.

          1. Well i didn’t even call the # i jus waited patiently nd now I got the release date 8-1-16 . It’s show time

          2. yay!!!! one of THE BEST days of yalls lives is just around the corner…awesome! I’m so excited for yall. Prayers for a smooth transition and good life going forward free from issues that could bring back to this awful life.

          3. Quick question. My husbands parole eligibility date was on 7-8-16. I’ve sent support letters and requested to speak with Parole. I’ve gotten letters confirming they’ve received everything. Unfortunately he hasn’t seen parole and Parole said that date is an estimate and it can take longer?? Is anyone familiar with this that can explain how it works or the process??

          4. My son was eligible for parole in Feb, got the denial/answer in June…then eligible again in July and got the approval/answer in October and was released near his PRD. It takes a while, unfortunately and honestly Id look at that PRD as being pretty close to when he will be home.

          5. Oh I gotcha thank you. So even tho his eligibility date passed then they can still see him right? I guess the longer he’s in there the more time he’s served and earned “good time?” My husband said his PRD is only given to him if parole is denied and he is given the “short way?” His PRD is more than half his 4 yr sentence for a non agg charge.

          6. My sons PRD was also about half way thru. I honestly cant tell you a for sure on anything, seems things work differently for each person, even if their charges/sentences are similar, but just from what Ive seen PRD is a good date to look to as to when our loved ones will be released. It seems that on aggravated charges, drug and dwi they tend to do about half their time. I just tried to look at it as God has a plan and knows what He is doing whether I liked it or understood it or not. Hang in there!

          7. Does it usually take 1-3 months for a parole answer after an offended has been interviewed by the IPO? Or how long does it take to post online?? I also wrote for them to call me but nothing yet. And does anybody know how GOOD TIME is earned or how??

          8. Its a long process and nerve wracking. I know they do their reviewing and calls/interviewing and then review more and finally vote. From my call from parole board the first time to seeing an answer online it was just a couple of weeks I think. I found the denial on a Saturday morning. My understanding on good time and line class change is after six months they get their time/line count change as long as no issues. After six months my sons prd changed from Dec 12 to Nov 29 so we knew he had gotten his good time. There is no rush on anything they do…hang in there!!

          9. Hey rose i have a question husband us getting release 8/1/16 at Huntsville, how early should i be there, what are the procedure, how long does it take for him to get out he is being discharged

          10. Discharged, so he did his whole sentence and is not coming out on parole right? When we were there, they told us they release 8-5 so we got there a little before 8. They started coming out closer to 9 I think and those that had completed their time came out first! We had to wait till after noon because my son came out on parole…you wont have to wait as long! I would take him a change of clothes and take yourself something to drink and just be prepared to stand around/sit at picnic tables. The visitor center has volunteers that are there to visit with you, give you info, answer questions and even prayed with all of us. Yay this is almost over for you!! Prayers all goes well and you never travel this road again!!

    1. Hello, my son was sentenced to 5 years in prison, he recently was approved for parole but now they are telling him he has to do 2years on the state charge even though they were ran concurrent. And the said they ate only giving him 35 days total even though he was in jail a total of 218 day?

      1. Hey Jazzett, I am not sure what the situation is with that, not enough information really. For one thing, was he in prison for 218 days or jail for that time? Good luck getting some answers about this and let us know if you have more details. Peace ~ Magnum

      2. Hi. I’m sorry for your situation. State Jail is pretty much day for day. I believe they have to do like 85% of that. So when there’s a state jail sentence with a TDCJ sentence they still have to complete state time. It’s up to the judge to recommend all, part or none of back time be credited. Hang in there. I know this is a dark road but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Praying this goes by as easily as possible for both of you.

  6. Hi Rose/Magnum how has everything been going? It’s been a while but my husband is being released on parole this upcoming Tuesday from Huntsville. I have several questions I’m very anxious and excited! So since he’s being released from Huntsville does that mean he’s going to have on some type of ankle monitoring device? Also I learned we have to go pick him up so how does the process work? Do we go inside somewhere and wait or in a parking lot and wait for him to come out? Right now he just caught chain back to Middleton unit will he be call home anytime during the next 4 days because I haven’t heard from him since Monday before he caught chain…

    1. Hey! How exciting!!! Unfortunately you probably wont hear from him until you see his face, argh I know. If the local parole office has not contacted you to set up where he is living and told you to get a landline and give them all info then he probably is not coming out on a monitor, he is coming home to you right? Other than monitor I’m not real sure as to why hes being released from Huntsville. You will drive there…take him some clothes as he will change in the visitors center. When you get there and park you will see people waiting on their loved ones to come out. They tell you they release from 9-5…but when we were there the ones on parole were released last so it was after noon due to the amount that were coming out having done their full sentences. He will be released with a bag of whatever he chooses to bring home, from commissary items to letters he has saved and pictures and a check for 50 bucks that he can cash there in Huntsville or after yall get home. My son just wanted to change and get the heck out of there on the road. I found myself standing and praying for each one coming out, rejoicing with/for those family members waiting and feeling very sad and praying even harder for those coming out to no one. Its heartbreaking seeing how many have no one there. There will be people that volunteer/work the visitor center and give you info, but basically just take you a drink and be prepared to just sit/stand and wait. The first little bit just give him room/time to readjust to outside life….so many came by to see my son that at times he felt totally overwhelmed and would go in the bedroom to be alone…they are so use to being on gaurd and watching their backs its hard to relax for a bit, just be patient and love him. I’m so very excited for you and your hubby!! Heres to a new life with no more jail/prison in yalls future! Big hugs to you!!!

      1. Hi Rose! Yayyy no word at all about getting a landline so no monitor I’m assuming. The PO only called this week and said what time to be in Huntsville to pick him up on Tuesday. Luckily it’s only a 2 1/2 hour drive from my home to Huntsville. I will take a few changes of clothes and shoes for him to change into. Wow I can’t imagine not being there to get my loved one. That’s all we can do is pray for those who have no one. I will definitely uplift and help him through the process of readjusting back home. Thank you Rose!

  7. Magnum, I’m sitting here thinking about putting all my thoughts/feelings from the preprison, during prison time down…do you want me to do it as a comment orrrrr?

    1. Hey Rose, I think it would be cool to get a post on here that is a parent’s perspective on their kid’s journey through the “justice” system. I am sure a lot of could relate to your experience and it could be really helpful to people. So what I would ask that you do is write it and email it to me at rivers@intexasprison.com And I can make it into a post and publish it. As far as tips go, it will be better to do several medium length posts than one enormous one. Maybe write about a couple different segments of your experience as separate posts. I’m glad you are wanting to give this a try! Peace ~ Magnum
